Sensible ("Sensible," "we," "us," or "our") is a web-based personal finance simulation platform designed for use by high school students in classroom settings. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to schools, teachers, and families.
Sensible is operated by Tyler Killen. If you have questions about this policy, contact tyler.killen@sensiblesim.com.
1. Who This Policy Covers
Sensible is intended to be used within a school setting, under the direction of a teacher or school administrator. Student accounts are created by teachers — Sensible does not offer public student self-signup.
2. Information We Collect
We collect only the information necessary to operate the platform for classroom use:
- Student name and email address, provided by the teacher when creating a student account.
- School/class enrollment information (which teacher's class or section a student is associated with).
- In-platform activity, including simulated financial transactions, completed assignments, quiz responses, and grades generated within the simulation.
- Usage data, collected in aggregate through Google Analytics (see Section 5), such as pages visited and general engagement patterns. This data is used to understand product usage and is not used to build advertising profiles of individual students.
We do not collect Social Security numbers, real financial account information, health information, or other sensitive personal data. All financial data within Sensible is simulated and has no connection to any student's real bank accounts, credit, or financial identity.
3. How We Use Information
We use collected information solely to:
- Operate student accounts and track student progress within the simulation
- Allow teachers to view assignment and grade data for their own students
- Maintain and improve the platform's functionality and reliability
- Communicate with teachers/administrators about their school's use of Sensible
4. No Sale of Data; No Targeted Advertising
We do not sell, rent, or trade student personal information to third parties. We do not use student data to serve targeted advertising, and we do not build behavioral advertising profiles of students. We do not use student data collected through Sensible for any purpose beyond delivering and improving the educational service itself.
5. Third-Party Services
Sensible uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage of the platform (e.g., which pages are used most). Google Analytics may use cookies or similar technologies to collect usage data. This data is used in aggregate/anonymized form and is not used to identify individual students for marketing purposes. Schools/districts that require analytics to be disabled or configured differently for student privacy compliance may contact us to discuss options.
We do not use any other third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services on Sensible at this time.
6. Data Sharing
We share student information only with:
- The teacher(s) and school administrators responsible for the student's account
- Service providers who host or support the technical operation of the platform ("subprocessors")
- Parties when required by law, or to protect the safety of students or the platform
Any subprocessor we use is required to protect student data under confidentiality and security obligations consistent with this policy, and may only use student data to provide the specific service they support — never for their own independent purposes. We do not share student data with any other third party for their own independent use.
7. Data Security
We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect student data, including:
- Encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all data in transit across the platform
- Encryption at rest for sensitive stored credentials, such as connected third-party API tokens
- Access controls limiting who can view student data (teachers see only their own students)
- Secure password storage — passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text
8. Data Storage Location
Sensible's data is hosted within the United States.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
Student data is retained for as long as needed to support the school's use of Sensible (typically the school year). Schools or teachers may request deletion of student accounts and associated data at any time by contacting tyler.killen@sensiblesim.com. Upon a verified request, we will delete the applicable student data within 30 days.
10. Data Breach Notification
In the event we confirm a data breach affecting student information, we will notify the affected school or district within 72 hours of confirming the incident.
11. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Sensible is designed for high school students and is provided to schools under the direction of teachers and administrators. Where Sensible is used with students under 13, accounts are created by the school under the "school official" exception recognized by FERPA, and the school is responsible for obtaining any parental consent required under COPPA. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children outside of this school-directed context.
12. FERPA
Sensible acts as a "school official" with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA when handling student education records on behalf of a school (a "Local Education Agency," or LEA). We use student data only for the purposes for which it was disclosed to us by the school and do not use it for any other purpose without authorization.
13. Parent and School Rights
Parents/guardians and school officials may request to review, correct, or request deletion of student data collected through Sensible by contacting the student's teacher/school or by emailing tyler.killen@sensiblesim.com.
14. Change of Ownership
If Sensible is ever acquired by, merged with, or transferred to another entity, that entity will be required to honor the commitments in this Privacy Policy with respect to student data collected prior to the transfer.
15. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Effective Date" above. Continued use of Sensible after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
